  25.             USAN (University Satellite Network) is a discipline oriented
  26.             network serving organizations that do research in the atmos-
  27.             pheric and oceanographic sciences. Current members  are  the
  28.             Universities  of  Miami, Oregon State, Penn State, Maryland,
  29.             Wisconsin, and the  Institute  of  Naval  Oceanography,  the
  30.             Naval Research Lab, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.

  32.             The primary use of the network is for  access  to  supercom-
  33.             puter facilities at NCAR. Secondary use is for access to the
  34.             Internet via the NSFnet node and other Internet gateways  at
  35.             NCAR.

  37.             The network is an IP satellite broadcast network with a star
  38.             configuration  with  the center at NCAR. Incoming traffic is
  39.             broadcast at 56Kbits from each node on its own unique  chan-
  40.             nel.  Outbound  traffic is broadcast at 224Kbits on a single
  41.             channel.

  43.             Membership in USAN is not restricted, however  members  must
  44.             share in the operating costs for the network.

  48.             Any IP host of any USAN member may access the network.

  69.             Any of the members  can  exchange  traffic  with  any  other
  70.             member  for  any  purpose.   Any  member  may use any of the
  71.             long-haul networks USAN has connections to, subject only  to
  72.             the restrictions of the owner of the long-haul network.

  74.             Members are free, at this time, to allow  transient  traffic
  75.             over USAN through their USAN gateways.

  79.             USAN is one gateway hop from the NSFnet, Las Alamos National
  80.             Labs,   Westnet  east,  NASA/Ames,  Department  of  Commerce
  81.             Boulder Labs, and a consortium of universities in Mexico.
